What the manufacturer actually lists
Kiln-dried wood, composite and PVC categories; consult drying-specific results.
Named species / categories
Kiln-dried Tigerwood · Kiln-dried Garapa · Kiln-dried Massaranduba · Kiln-dried Padauk · Kiln-dried Acacia · Kiln-dried Balau · Kiln-dried Tatajuba · Kiln-dried Merbau
Explicit exclusions
Air-dried Ipe · Pine · Air-dried Tigerwood · Air-dried Garapa · Air-dried Massaranduba
Conditions that change the answer
- In the species chart, kiln-dried Massaranduba is listed for ExtremeKD but rejected for Extreme and Extreme4. Do not collapse the three models into a single “Ipe Clip compatible” label.
- The current ExtremeKD dimension graphic conflicts with the 2014 specification and contains inconsistent fraction/decimal labels. Its envelope remains unverified.
- A drying category must be supported by the actual board condition. Use the manufacturer spacing tools to avoid crushing the spacer leg.
- A species name alone does not approve the supplied profile, moisture condition, screw or exposure.
- For saltwater, pool chemicals or treated substrates, verify the complete metal combination and manufacturer corrosion guidance. A stainless insert is not a blanket marine approval.
Connection anatomy
See what the screw actually penetrates
The angled screw penetrates the clip, the first board, then the joist. The next board seats on the free wing; its opposite edge gets the next fastener.
Read with the exact product instructions. Features are simplified for visibility; these are not production drawings or structural details.
Read the dated envelope separately from fit approval
Needs Verification. This drawing visualizes the 2014 specification only. The current product graphic differs: width 1 in, tab .147 in, leg .250 in; some fraction labels contradict the decimals. Do not use either reference as an approved production drawing.
Published standard-height envelope, DeckWise architectural specification (2014), p. 2. Confirm the current part revision. This is not a manufacturing drawing; no tolerances, radii or screw-hole geometry are inferred. Tall versions differ.
Dimensions belong to different parts
Installed gap, clip size, board thickness and groove cut are separate measurements. Mill tolerances and the sold accessory match remain separate approvals.
| Measurement | Inches | Millimeters | Applies to / limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed gap | 0.25 | 6.35 | ExtremeKD. |
| Required groove cut | 0.15625 | 3.969 | Manufacturer interface requirement, not clip thickness. |
| Required groove depth | 0.5 | 12.7 | Centered vertically: lower edge = (actual thickness − cut) ÷ 2. |
| Clip overall width | Unverified | — | Needs Verification: 2014 specification lists 0.995 in; the current ExtremeKD graphic differs and contains fraction/decimal conflicts. |
| Clip overall height | Unverified | — | Needs Verification: 2014 specification lists 0.39 in; the current ExtremeKD graphic differs and contains fraction/decimal conflicts. |
| Clip tab thickness | Unverified | — | Needs Verification: 2014 specification lists 0.148 in; the current ExtremeKD graphic differs and contains fraction/decimal conflicts. |
| Clip leg height | Unverified | — | Needs Verification: 2014 specification lists 0.242 in; the current ExtremeKD graphic differs and contains fraction/decimal conflicts. |
Metric values are calculated conversions, not added manufacturing precision.
The screw is part of the system
Kit screw specification must match the selected substrate and exposure; a clip-family name does not identify the sold screw.
Installation sequence
Establish the starter-board face attachment and plug detail. Verify the selected board and kit before routing.
For the documented Ipe Clip interface, center a 5/32-inch cut, 1/2 inch deep. Check the actual supplied groove.
Hardwood: predrill a 1/8-inch pilot through the board at approximately 45°. Drive the screw through clip, board and into the joist.
Seat the next board on the exposed clip wing. Fasten its opposite edge; do not screw both boards through the same clip. Avoid overdriving.
Composite/PVC uses the manufacturer’s vertical screw path instead. Check the decking brand’s own instructions and kit. Resolve ends, perimeter and board joints separately.
